Give new life to old toys

Kairo’s Kids values sustainability and will utilize environmentally friendly practices wherever possible. Instead of purchasing all of the toys we adapt new, we can often give new life to old toys other children have outgrown or lost interest in. You can help support our organization by providing toys to be recycled. We accept toy or supply donations from the community at: 3189 Princeton Road Number 182 Hamilton OH 45011.

To arrange for local pick up of bulk donations or to host a toy drive on behalf of Kairo’s Kids, please contact regan@kidslikekairo.org .

Our Most Needed Items:

Adaptive Switches

Adaptive Switches

Adaptive Switches

Many of the toys provided by Kairo’s Kids are switch adapted. This means the toy is re-wired so that it can be activated by using a large external button (adaptive switch) that is connected to the toy. There are many different types of adaptive switches based on the user’s individual needs. Unfortunately, adaptive switches can be very costly and unattainable for the families of many disabled children. Kairo’s Kids provides free adaptive switches to as many applicants as possible based on the availability of funds. It is our hope to purchase a 3D printer and make our adaptive switches in-house in the near future. You can purchase an adaptive switch for a child in need by visiting our Etsy registry below.

When switch adapting toys, this is the wiring we add in that allows an external switch to be connected.

Tray Toys

Many times, toys with suction cups are useful to our organization because they can be suctioned on wheelchair or activity chair trays, allowing the child to play with the toy without it rolling away or being knocked off the tray. They are also useful other places, such as the bathtub or on hospital or safety beds.

Batteries

Tray Toys

We go through batteries fast! Since we utilize pre-owned toys, we like to always start with a fresh set. Our most commonly used types are AA and AAA, but donations all types are accepted and appreciated.

Linkimals

This is where it all started! The Fisher Price Linkimals are a favorite of Kairo’s and what made his mom learn to switch adapt toys. We love the Linkimals because it’s like getting multiple toys at once. See, all of the Linkimal toys pair with one another. So if a child has one switch adapted Linkimal, they now have access to the entire Linkimals line, even if the others aren’t adapted. The original Linkimals line was discontinued, but we love receiving donations from the community or finding them at second hand shops.

Many of the toys we obtain are musical, light up, cause effect toys targeted toward children of younger developmental stages. We would love to provide more accessible toys for older kids and adolescents. Some examples may include: battery operated dart guns, Furbies or battery operated ‘pets’, and battery operated activities such as paint spinners or pottery wheels.

Easily Activated Toys

Easily Activated Toys

We find that some toys are more accessible to kids with physical disabilities, even without being adapted. Often times, these are toys that only require a light exertion of force to activate, toys that respond to movement, or toys that are activated by sound. (This includes instruments or tactile toys for sensory play!)
